Fayoum, the little Egypt

Located about 75 kilometers from Cairo, Fayoum existed via its remarkable Bahr Youssuf Canal that keeping abreast from the Nile feeding the whole depression of Fayoum. Fayoum is not a true oasis since it depends on Nile water instead of underground springs or wells. Starting from the nearby Giza Pyramids, you can start your brief trip to such a peaceful area that can represent a relief from the hustle and bustle of Cairo. The road to Fayoum started passing through pure desert areas, green natural/agricultural vegetation spots and Kom Oshim Ptolemaic-Roman Museum. At this point, either one can proceed ahead to the Fayoum rural city to join the culture attractions of Fayoum water wheels (Sawaqui Al-Hadeer), mixed with the living traditions with Fayoum people and ancient Egyptian remain on the borders of Fayoum/Beni Swif.

In Fayoum, you can follow the cultures affected and be traced in there from the ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans to the Coptic and Muslim eras. The prehistoric people who lived in Fayoum were, at first, nomadic hunters and gatherers, but later began harvesting plants near the lake. This developed into what is said to be the earliest agricultural area in the world, where fences were erected, and guarded warehouses built. It has remained an agriculture center, well known for its fruits, vegetables, and chickens.

Other option is to make a turn from Cairo Fayoum desert road into the great Lake Qaroun with agriculture surroundings, distinguished palm groove and the Northern Lake amazing desert of Jebel Qatrani; Wadi El-Rayan lakes and their Saharan scenes; Mouilleh sand dune fields and Wadi El-Hitan.
